In Emily Martin's piece entitled The Egg and the Sperm, she continuously discusses the passive role of the egg. It seems that doctors of the time were projecting their own ideas about femininity and womanhood on the egg itself, personifying it. It seems that an inquisitive doctor would be more curious about the complex role and life cycle of an egg rather than acting like the female body is the passive ground waiting to be fertilized by a farmers seeds.
Very true! It's strange that they think about the women being the passive role when the woman's body does most of the work to bring someone into the world. All men need is the seed, and they're done! Women need to be able to carry that child, and then birth it. Seems very illogical to think of women as passive creatures in creating life.
ReplyDeleteI agree to this as well but, I feel like they were also saying it's a very 'finicky' thing. By this I mean the egg is very smart scanning potential sperm that will fertilize the egg it scans for viable and compatible DNA. I think this they were trying to say a million or so sperm will all go for the same egg, no matter the egg but the egg will only take just one sperm after it's been carefully processed. Although we get fertilized and "done" we have the most important part and process.
ReplyDeleteI agree! The texts that Emily Martin referenced back to in her article described the egg as "large and passive" while the sperm were described as "small and active". These small and probably meaningless adjectives to small people are a big deal to others. The egg is an obvious huge role in the production of life and to look at an egg in a negative life is frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. It is not fair that women has to put in all the work and watch their bodies be deformed and then to not have any say in the matter. I always wondered how men became more dominant, women create life and should be respected for that.
